Mauritanian parliamentarians appealed for enacting legislation to criminalize normalizing relations with Israel.
This came in a joint statement of 3 opposition political parties; Union des Forces du Progrès (UFP), Alliance Populaire Progressiste (APP), and Caelition for Democracy and Justice (CDJ).
“ In the wake of the wide range of the political and economic normalization with Israel and its arrival to our Moroccan and Mauritanian regions, the pressure the Israeli authorities practice,” as stated in the statement.
It also called for all the parliamentary blocs to make more efforts in order to assure Mauritania’s support of the issues of freedom, mainly the Palestinian cause.
“Normalizing relations with Israeli isn’t only a crime, it also an admission of the crimes committed by Israeli against the Palestinians every day,” it added.
Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, former president of Mauritania, decided to freeze the relations with Israel in 2009. In 2010, he officially cut the relation with Israel and fired the Israeli Ambassador from Nouakchott.
Mauritania’s government confirmed its constant position of advocating the Palestinian people and their right of having an independent country.
In last September, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, a Mauritanian diplomat, emphasized on Mauritania’s position of supporting the Palestinian according to the resolutions issued by the UN.
Other Political forces and Mauritanian organizations declared their rejections of the agreements of normalization between Israel and the Arab countries, most recently the agreement between Morocco and Israel.
