The Israeli courts escalated in 2020 the issuance of administrative detention orders against Palestinians, as they issued 1100 orders whether they were new or renewed, making an 8% increase over the year 2019, said the Palestine Center for Prisoners Studies.
The center stated in a statement, a copy of which obtained by Safa, that the Israeli authorities ignored the calls and appeals made by many international institutions and organizations, including the United Nations, to release the administrative prisoners in light of the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The director of the Center, Riyad Al-Ashqar, confirmed that Israel aims from the policy of administrative detention to waste the years of the lives of Palestinians behind bars without charge, saying that the Israeli courts issued administrative orders against 9 deputies, 6 of them are still in prisons.
Al-Ashqar pointed out that during the past year, Israel issued 1100 administrative orders against prisoners, including 750 renewed orders to extending the period of imprisonment, and 350 new orders issued against prisoners for the first time, most of whom were ex-prisoners.
He highlighted that the Israeli authorities are holding 3 Palestinian women under administrative detention.
Moreover, the Israeli courts issued administrative orders against 4 children during the past year, three of them served their sentences and were released, while the child Suleiman Salem Qatash (16) from Ramallah, is still under arrest.
Al-Ashqar confirmed that by the end of 2020, the number of administrative prisoners reached 380, most of whom were ex-prisoners who spent different periods in Israeli prisons.
The Center called for a serious and real international action towards this policy as Israel uses administrative detention as a means of collective punishment against the Palestinian people.
