Stockholm saw large crowds take to the streets on Saturday, with hundreds protesting Israel’s recent land registration plan in the West Bank. Demonstrators, gathered initially at Odenplan Square, marched through the city calling for international action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and opposing what they described as measures paving the way for de facto annexation.
The Israeli cabinet approved the plan on 15 February, allowing the registration of land previously frozen and invalidating old Jordanian laws. Officials have also released decades-old land records, a move critics say strengthens settler control and accelerates the takeover of Palestinian territories. Protesters in Stockholm carried banners reading “Stop the genocide” and “Children are dying in Gaza,” reflecting deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian toll.
Activists at the demonstration emphasised the urgency of international intervention, pointing to a long history of escalating military and settler operations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. According to local estimates, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and over 11,000 wounded in the West Bank since late 2023, with tens of thousands detained. Gaza has seen even higher casualties, with civilian infrastructure severely damaged and thousands of families displaced. Campaigners called on the Swedish government and parliament to adopt concrete measures and launch a sanctions initiative targeting Israel.
