Calls Grow for UN Probe Into Missing Children in Gaza

A Palestinian rights organisation has urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to launch an urgent investigation into the fate of hundreds of Palestinian children reported missing in Gaza amid the ongoing genocidal war. In a statement delivered during the council’s latest session, legal representatives said the growing number of missing minors has become a grave humanitarian issue, with many believed to remain buried beneath the rubble of homes destroyed during bombardment.

According to documentation gathered by the group, numerous families across Gaza still have no information about children who disappeared during attacks on residential neighbourhoods. The organisation says restrictions imposed by Israeli occupation authorities on the entry of heavy machinery and rescue teams have severely limited the ability to clear debris, leaving large sections of destroyed housing blocks unrecovered. In many areas, collapsed buildings have effectively turned into mass graves where the fate of entire families remains unknown.

The group also warned that the humanitarian situation has pushed some children into extreme danger. Severe shortages of food and essential supplies have forced desperate families to search for aid in highly exposed areas, sometimes close to active military zones. In other cases, witnesses have reported children disappearing after being surrounded by Israeli forces, with no information provided about their whereabouts or conditions.

Human rights advocates say the scale of the tragedy continues to grow. Palestinian organisations estimate that more than 21,000 children have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, while thousands more remain unaccounted for. Families searching for their sons and daughters say the uncertainty has left them trapped between hope and grief, unable to confirm whether their loved ones are alive, buried beneath the ruins, or being held somewhere unknown.

Campaigners are calling on the Human Rights Council to push for immediate access for rescue teams, transparency regarding Palestinian prisoners and urgent international action to determine the fate of missing children. For many families in Gaza, they say, the search for answers has become yet another painful chapter in a genocidal war that continues to devastate the territory.
