An Oscar-nominated film recounting the death of a young girl in Gaza has been barred from release in India, in a move that has sparked criticism over censorship and political considerations.
The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Franco-Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, tells the story of a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli fire in 2024 as she attempted to flee Gaza with her family. Despite international screenings, including in Israel, Indian authorities have refused to approve its release.
Officials are understood to have justified the decision on the grounds that the film could affect India’s diplomatic ties with Israel. The ruling reflects New Delhi’s increasingly close relationship with Tel Aviv, particularly in defence and technology, while maintaining a delicate regional balance.
The ban has drawn sharp criticism from political figures and observers, who argue that preventing audiences from viewing the film undermines democratic principles and freedom of expression. For many, the decision raises broader questions about how narratives surrounding Gaza are controlled and presented on the global stage.
