European governments have reacted strongly after footage circulated showing Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir appearing to observe the handling of detained activists from a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla, prompting widespread criticism and renewed diplomatic pressure. Several capitals reportedly summoned Israeli ambassadors following the emergence of the images and testimonies from those held after the convoy was intercepted at sea.
Activists who have since been released and returned to their home countries have described what they say were degrading conditions during detention, including humiliation, intimidation and inappropriate conduct by personnel. Among them, French activist Meriem Hadjal alleged she witnessed sexual harassment while in custody, further intensifying scrutiny of how detainees were treated.
The flotilla, made up of more than 50 vessels carrying aid supplies and international campaigners, was intercepted while attempting to challenge restrictions on maritime access to Gaza amid the ongoing genocidal war on the territory. Around 430 people were taken into custody before many were later deported, with rights groups now calling for an independent investigation into the handling of those detained.
