Hemaya calls for international investigation into killing of elderly Abu Aqeel

The Hemaya Center for Human Rights called for an international investigation into the crime of an Israeli settler killing an elderly Palestinian woman by running over in the town of as-Samu, south of Hebron, in the south of the West Bank.

The center confirmed in a statement received by Safa on Wednesday that this crime coincided with a marked increase in the frequency of the daily Israelis and settlers' crimes against the Palestinians.

According to the Center’s follow-up, an Israeli settler carried out this morning, Wednesday, April 7, 2021, a deliberate run-over of the Palestinian citizen Shafiqa Mohammad Suleiman Abu Aqeel, 73, while she was crossing the street at the western entrance to the town of as-Samu, which led to her extremely serious injury. Abu Aqeel was transferred to Soroka Medical Center, where she died.

The behavior of the Israeli settlers is part of the daily routine of violence and aggression that settlers have practiced against the cities and villages of the West Bank for many years.

Hemaya called on all concerned parties, including the Human Rights Council, to open an immediate and independent investigation into the killing of Abu Aqeel.

Also, the international community was called to take practical steps in terms of deterring the Israelis and settlers and stopping their violations of the provisions and rules of international law governing the state of occupation, especially what was stipulated in the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Hemaya appealed to the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions to fulfill their obligations to guarantee the right to protection for Palestinian civilians in Palestine.
