12 US institutes urge congress to intervene to stop evictions in Silwan

12 pro-Palestine institutes in the United States, through a communications campaign, called on the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and the member of the Democratic Party Chuck Schumer to intervene to stop the Israeli decisions to demolish 16 houses in Silwan town in occupied Jerusalem.

In a statement, the institutes considered that Pelosi and Schumer have the force to press on Israel to stop the demolitions and the policy of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians.

Since May 2021, hundreds of Palestinian families in eastern Jerusalem, including 16 houses in Silwan town, faced the risk of forced displacement, noting that the United States’ support of Israel and the silence on all Israeli crimes against the Palestinians encourage Israel to practice more of ethnic cleansing, the statement said.

Adalah human rights organization, American Muslims for Palestine, Arab Resource and Organizing Center, Jewish Voices for Change, the American Palestinian Network and other parties sponsored the campaign.

The campaign included suggested texts to be used by Pelosi and Schumer to press on the Israeli government to stop the demolitions and eviction decisions against the Palestinian families in Silwan.

The text mentioned the risk of displacement the Palestinian families are being facing, and stated that the support of the Israeli violations against the Palestinians’ human rights must end.
