European Union condemns PA's detention of dozen activists in Ramallah

The European Union reported that the Palestinian security forces' detention of dozens of activists in Ramallah is disturbing, calling for a quick, transparent investigation into the assassination of the political activist Nezar Banat.

In a statement for the representative of the European Union in Palestine, he said that the security forces arrested, on August 21-22, dozens of activists in Ramallah who participated in peaceful protests calling for achieving transparency in the investigation into the murder of Nezar Banat, and prosecuting the killers.

"We expect that the Palestinian Authority will commit to the criteria of the international conventions of human rights, including the right to freedom of speech and peaceful protest," European Union said.

It also confirmed that the violence used against the defenders of human rights, activists and peaceful protesters is unaccepted.

It called on the Palestinian Authority to transparently finish the investigations into Banat's murder as fast as possible.

Durin the past 3 days, the Palestinian security forces arrested dozens of activists and leaders after cancelling two initiatives held; one called for prosecuting Banat's killers, and the other was against the peaceful activists' detention.
