Sada Social Center, a Ramallah-based social media watch group, has called for an independent investigation into the criteria Facebook uses in designating certain people and organizations as dangerous and thus banning their names from appearing on its pages.
This came in response to the increasing leaks of lists of personalities and institutions that Facebook has banned from its pages. The Center expressed its condemnation that these lists contain names of Palestinian national symbols, historical figures, political parties, associations, civil institutions and others active in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Sada Social added that these lists, if true, are a new witness to the bias against digital Palestinian content, in addition to the increasing violations against pro-Palestinian content by the social media giant.
The Center stated that since the beginning of the year, it has registered more than 550 complaints of violations against Palestinian content on Facebook and its affiliate, Instagram.
Meantime, Sada Social expressed its appreciation for the statement issued by more than 400 employees of Amazon and Google, in which they demanded the administrations of these companies to terminate the contracts of the "Nimbus Project," a $1.2 billion contract to provide cloud services and products that they described as dangerous for the Israeli army and government.
The center warned of the danger of what the statement revealed about the role of this technology in illegally imposing censorship and collecting data about Palestinians, and facilitating the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands.
Sada Social Center is a voluntary youth initiative launched in 2017 to protect Palestinian digital content on social media and advocate for Palestinian digital rights.
