Israel to build more settlements during Trump's term, expert says

The Israeli authorities are pushing to build more settlement units and to legalize thousands of settlement outposts in Jerusalem during Trump's last days, said the specialist in Jerusalem affairs, Khaled Zabarqa.

Zabarqa told SAFA in a special statement that Israel is seeking to advance its settlement plans in the city prior to the inauguration of US president-elect Joe Biden.

"During his presidency, Trump gave Israel many privileges aimed at full control of Jerusalem, in clear violation of all international laws," Zabarqa added.

The Israeli municipality in Jerusalem is pushing to build and ratify more settlement before Biden enters the White House in January 2020.

Zabarqa confirmed that the Israeli policy focuses mainly on displacing the Palestinian people from Jerusalem and replacing them with Jews with the purpose of turning the city into a Jewish one. Therefore, it seeks to implement this plan at the earliest time, using various means.

Moreover, he pointed out that the approval of the Israeli Army Minister Benny Gantz of 1700 settlement units in the West Bank indicated that there is a full agreement to take over all Palestinian territories.

Zebarqa warned of the dangers of Israeli policies towards the Palestinians, which are one of the indicators of the next stage that aim to impose a new reality on the Palestinian territories.

In the same vein, Aviv Tatarsky, from the human rights group Ir Amim, said that "Netanyahu's government is taking advantage of the end of Trump's term in order to implement a quick step that would restrict Israel and prevent at any cost a future political settlement," eliminating any chance of a possible solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict under Biden's administration.

Recent information published by Peace Now revealed that Israel approved building 26,331 settlement units, and developed infrastructure plans to settle one million settlers to the West Bank during the term of US President Donald Trump in the past four years.

However, the information did not include the Ministry of Construction and Housing plan to build 9,000 settlement units in Qalandia, and the Israeli Prime Minister’s announcement of his intention to build thousands of units in Jabal Abu Ghneim and hundreds of units in settlements built on lands in East Jerusalem.
