The Buffer Zone in Gaza: Security or Oppression?

A recent report argues that Israel’s proposed buffer zone in Gaza is less about security and more about displacing Palestinians and destroying their land. The plan, launched after the October 7, 2023 war, aims to shrink Gaza’s size, divide it into isolated areas, and force people out of their homes.

Israel says the buffer zone will stop attacks and secure its borders. However, the report claims it’s a strategy to control Gaza’s resources, destroy farmland, and make life harder for Palestinians. It also serves as a tool to pressure Palestinian groups and expand Israeli settlements.

The United Nations and Palestinian leaders have called the plan a war crime. Neighbouring countries, like Egypt and Jordan, warn it could destabilise the region. Even some Israelis fear it will harm the country’s image and economy.

The report warns the plan will worsen Gaza’s humanitarian crisis and increase resistance. It urges the international community to take action against Israel’s policies and protect Palestinian rights.
