Tailors Transform Aid Blankets into Winter Jackets

In Deir al-Balah, a group of displaced tailors is transforming aid blankets into warm jackets to help families cope with the cold. Among them is Abu Adham Khalifa, who welcomes customers with a smile and takes care to craft jackets that are both functional and well-designed.

Displaced by relentless bombings, these tailors sought refuge in central Gaza, where they work long hours using basic sewing machines. Despite electricity shortages, they rely on solar power and generators to keep their operations running, transforming simple blankets into jackets that look almost imported.

Samir Abu Azam notes that crafting a single jacket takes about three hours, with customers paying 50 shekels (around $13). While costs are high due to the price of materials and operational challenges, many rely on these jackets as a lifeline against the harsh winter.

Before the war, Gaza’s textile sector employed over 8,000 workers across nearly 300 factories. Years of blockade and repeated wars have devastated the industry, with power shortages forcing many to abandon the trade altogether.

Despite these challenges, the tailors remain hopeful for an end to the war and a chance to rebuild their lives. They urge donor organisations to provide urgent support for housing and economic recovery to help them revive their work and support their community.
