Dozens of Congress Members Condemn Israeli Demolitions of Palestinian Homes

Around 40 Congress members called on the American administration to intervene to halt Israeli policy of displacement and demolitions of Palestinian homes.

In a letter sent today to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the members condemned the Israeli demolition of the Bedouin village of Khirbet Humsa in the Palestinian Jordan Valley, and investigate whether American military equipment was used in the operation.

The letter described the Israeli policy as a "creeping annexation" that would not happen without the U.S. government supports.

"Creeping annexation cannot be a policy that the U.S. government supports if we wish to see peace in the region," said the letter, signed by the 40 members.

"This single act was the largest Israeli displacement of Palestinians in four years, behavior only made possible by continued silence from the American government," it added. "In addition to requesting that the State Department condemn this violation of international law, we also wish to know if American-sourced military equipment was used in the recent Israeli government displacements of the Palestinian Bedouin community of Humsa al-Baquia (Khirbet Humsa)."

On 3 November, the night of the US election, the Israeli forces demolished the Palestinian Bedouin community, displacing 74 Palestinians, including 41 children.

It is worth mentioning that Pompeo is heading to Israel this week, where he will be visiting an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank.

His visit comes exactly one year after he said the US did not consider Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land to be illegal.
