War and Agriculture: The Decimation of Gaza’s Livestock Sector

The ongoing genocidal war by “Israel”  in Gaza has inflicted catastrophic damage on the region’s agricultural sector, particularly livestock, further deepening the humanitarian and economic crisis. Mohammed Abu Odeh, spokesperson for Gaza’s Ministry of Agriculture, revealed that livestock production losses have reached a staggering $232 million since the beginning of the conflict, triggering a dire food security crisis.

According to Abu Odeh, 90% of poultry farms in Gaza have been destroyed by Israeli bombardment, leading to the death of vast numbers of birds and animals. The impact extends to sheep and goats, with 60,000 reported dead, and 90% of calf farms obliterated. Compounding these losses is the complete destruction of Gaza’s bee sector, which once housed 20,000 hives producing 250 tons of honey annually.

The devastation is not limited to livestock. The destruction of critical infrastructure—water wells, electricity networks, and feed supplies—has crippled the region's agricultural capabilities. These conditions have pushed Gaza’s residents closer to the brink of a food and economic catastrophe.

Abu Odeh called on the international community to intervene urgently, appealing for support to rehabilitate Gaza’s agricultural sector. Assistance in restoring infrastructure, providing feed, and securing production resources is essential to ensuring food security for the Strip’s population.

The destruction of Gaza’s livestock sector highlights the far-reaching consequences of the conflict, as a vital source of sustenance and livelihood for thousands is systematically dismantled, leaving a deeply scarred economy and an increasingly vulnerable population.
