Thousands of people gathered in Dublin to celebrate the closure of the Israeli embassy in Ireland, a move seen as a significant moment for pro-Palestinian advocates. The event, held in a large hall, saw participants waving Palestinian and Irish flags, with a diverse crowd including members of the Arab and Muslim communities.
Videos of the celebration were widely shared on social media, capturing the jubilant atmosphere. Concurrently, outside the embassy, Irish citizens observed as the Israeli flag was lowered in preparation for the closure.
The closure followed an announcement by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who cited Ireland’s “extreme anti-Israel policies” as the reason. Ireland has been vocal in its recognition of a Palestinian state and its backing of legal actions against Israel at the International Criminal Court.
In response, Ireland firmly rejected accusations of antisemitism, reiterating its dedication to peace, human rights, and international law. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris dismissed the embassy closure as a “diplomacy of distraction,” asserting that Ireland would not be silenced in its criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023, Ireland has issued multiple statements condemning Israeli attacks on civilians. Protests and demonstrations supporting the Palestinian cause have become a regular occurrence across the country.
In May, Ireland, alongside Spain and Norway, officially recognised the Palestinian state, underscoring its commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights. The embassy's closure further reflects the widening divide between Ireland and Israel over policies in the occupied Palestinian territories and the ongoing war in Gaza.
