UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised significant concern regarding the potential annexation of parts or all of the West Bank by Israel, a move he deems a severe violation of international law. He warned that such actions would jeopardise the integrity of Palestinian territories in Gaza and the West Bank, further destabilising the region. Guterres' remarks come as Israeli officials openly discuss annexation plans, particularly with the return of Donald Trump to the White House, which has reignited support for the controversial policy.
In addition to the annexation threat, Guterres welcomed the ceasefire in Gaza, which ended 15 months of devastating conflict. He urged all parties involved to uphold the ceasefire agreement, stressing the need for its full implementation, the liberation of all hostages, and a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. He also emphasised the necessity of rebuilding trust and working toward a peaceful resolution based on the two-state solution.
Furthermore, Guterres called for international cooperation to reunify Gaza with the West Bank, addressing political, economic, social, and administrative aspects. He highlighted the critical role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in continuing aid efforts for Palestinian refugees and appealed for the agency’s support. The ongoing annexation threats, along with changes in the political landscape, have raised serious concerns over the future of the peace process and the viability of a two-state solution.
