Ahmad Halabi, only fifteen, moves with urgency, pulling clothing and belongings from the rubble of what was once his family’s home. The seven-story building near Al-Saftawi roundabout in northern Gaza, which housed several members of the Al-Halabi family, was reduced to ruins during a recent Israeli incursion.
Each small discovery Ahmad makes—a piece of clothing or a usable item—brings a fleeting moment of joy. Yet, the overwhelming sadness of seeing their safe haven destroyed quickly returns, a stark reminder of the devastating reality his family now faces.
Ahmad’s mother watches the scene with determined eyes, declaring, "They can destroy our home, but they cannot destroy our spirit. We are the original owners of this land, and no force can drive us away." The Al-Halabi family, like thousands of others in Gaza, sees this destruction not as an isolated act but as part of a broader campaign to displace Palestinians.
"Despite their attempts to break us, we will remain steadfast," she continues. "This land is ours, and we will defend it with everything we have." Their resolve serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of Gaza’s people, who refuse to surrender their right to live on their ancestral land, even in the face of unimaginable hardship.
