Gaza Municipality Struggles to Provide Essential Services Amidst Severe Equipment Shortages

Gaza Municipality has confirmed that a severe shortage of equipment is significantly hindering its ability to provide vital services following the destruction of most of its machinery by Israeli occupation forces.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the municipality reported that approximately 133 municipal vehicles, which account for over 80% of its equipment, were destroyed during the occupation's assault. This includes vehicles essential for waste collection, sewage treatment, and clearing damaged roads.

The municipality further revealed that the remaining machinery is outdated and in need of constant repairs, but essential spare parts and oils for maintenance are unavailable. Additionally, there is a critical shortage of fuel to operate the equipment needed for waste collection, road clearing, and other essential services.

Hundreds of streets in Gaza remain blocked and destroyed as a result of the occupation's bombardment, causing massive damage to the city’s infrastructure, especially its water and sewage networks. The accumulation of waste in the streets and temporary dumpsites is escalating, urgently requiring machinery to clear and level the debris to restore movement for residents.

The municipality has called on both local and international organizations to urgently provide the necessary machinery, spare parts, and fuel to restore essential services. This intervention is critical to revitalising daily life, alleviating the ongoing health and environmental crisis, and supporting the city’s neighborhoods.

On Sunday morning, a ceasefire agreement was reached between Palestinian resistance groups and Israel after 471 days of genocidal violence. The war claimed more than 47,000 lives, left thousands more missing or wounded, and resulted in an unparalleled humanitarian disaster, alongside widespread destruction of homes, public facilities, and vital infrastructure.
