The Palestinian Water Authority announced that the occupation army destroyed the only seawater desalination plant in northern Gaza during recent ground operations. This plant, with a daily production capacity of 10,000 cubic meters, served the entire northwestern neighborhoods of Gaza City.
Its destruction leaves no alternative sources to meet the urgent water needs, especially with the high salinity of the area's groundwater.
Technical teams reported severe damage to the plant's electrical and mechanical components, as well as the complete destruction of key infrastructure, including five seawater intake wells, the inlet pipeline, power generators, pumps, and external fences.
The massive destruction of residential neighborhoods and infrastructure has also hindered access to water and sanitation facilities in the area.
The damage to the plant exacerbates Gaza's already critical water crisis, as desalination plants are the only safe source of drinking water. With no immediate alternatives, the situation threatens the availability of potable water for thousands of residents.
In response, the Water Authority plans to install ten mobile desalination plants in central and southern Gaza as part of emergency relief efforts. Each plant will have a production capacity of 25 cubic meters per hour, producing 250 cubic meters over 10 hours, to provide urgent and temporary solutions for safe drinking water.
