Death Toll Rises in Israeli Prisons as Two More Palestinian Detainees Die in Custody

Two Palestinian detainees from Gaza, Mohammed Sharif Al-Asali and Ibrahim Adnan Ashour, have died in Israeli custody, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs. Their deaths bring the total number of Palestinian detainees killed in Israeli prisons since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza to over 50, marking the highest death toll in Israeli detention since 1967. This period has become the bloodiest in the history of the occupation, with reports of mistreatment and deteriorating conditions inside Israeli detention facilities.

Since early December, the number of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons has exceeded 10,300, including hundreds of Gazans who have been forcibly disappeared in military camps. Among the detainees are 90 women, at least 345 children, and 3,428 administrative detainees held without charge or trial. Testimonies from released prisoners reveal widespread accounts of torture, denial of medical care, and inhumane conditions, raising serious concerns about Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees.

Human rights groups have repeatedly warned that the escalating number of deaths in Israeli custody reflects systematic abuse and neglect. The ongoing mass arrests and enforced disappearances not only violate international law but also deepen the suffering of Palestinian families, who are left without information about their loved ones. As the war on Gaza continues, the plight of Palestinian prisoners remains a stark reminder of the wider oppression and brutality they endure under Israeli occupation.
