Riyad Mansour: The World Must Respect Palestinians' Desire to Stay in Gaza

Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, emphasized that the world should respect Palestinians’ decision to remain in Gaza. This statement came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to take control of Gaza. Mansour stated that even if parts of Gaza are destroyed, Palestinians have chosen to return, and their wish should be respected.

Mansour called on global leaders to help rebuild Gaza, including its schools, hospitals, and homes. He strongly believes that Gaza is a part of Palestine, and its people have a deep attachment to their land. "This is their place, and they love to live there," Mansour said in a press exchange.

Trump’s announcement that the U.S. would permanently control Gaza and relocate its two million residents shocked the world. The plan was introduced amid protests during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington. Trump suggested creating "a beautiful area" to resettle Palestinians, but this idea was met with strong opposition from Mansour.

Following a ceasefire agreement in January, thousands of displaced Palestinians returned to Gaza. Mansour revealed that 400,000 Palestinians walked back to the northern part of the Strip in just two days. He stressed that the decision on Gaza’s future must ultimately lie in the hands of the Palestinian people.

Since October 2023, over 1.9 million people have been displaced in Gaza, according to the UN. Mansour reaffirmed that Palestinians should have the right to determine their fate and rebuild their homes in Gaza.
