The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Thursday that the fifth batch of 50 patients from the Gaza Strip is scheduled to be evacuated today through the Rafah crossing, in accordance with the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
The evacuation of Palestinian patients and wounded individuals from Gaza began on Saturday through the Rafah crossing towards Egypt for treatment, marking the first time the crossing has been operational since its occupation by Israeli forces in May of last year.
This step allows for the evacuation of the wounded from Gaza, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
Dozens of patients and their companions left the Gaza Strip heading to Egyptian territory and some Arab countries for treatment abroad via the Rafah land crossing.
Medical teams in Gaza gathered the patients at the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City and the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Yunis early in the morning, before they were transported by the WHO to the land crossing.
Since the occupation of the Rafah crossing on May 7, 2024, Israeli forces have closed the land crossing between Egypt and Gaza, preventing the exit of patients, wounded individuals, and travelers, except for limited evacuation operations carried out through the Kerem Shalom crossing and by the WHO, with some patients transported to Emirati hospitals via Ramon Airport.
