Gaza’s sanitation sector is on the verge of collapse, worsening the suffering of its citizens as Israeli attacks devastate critical infrastructure. Assem al-Nabih, spokesperson for Gaza Municipality, warned that rainwater mixing with untreated sewage in the Sheikh Radwan Pond has created an environmental and health disaster.
Despite completing a drainage line to the sea, the municipality lacks fuel to operate pumps, increasing flood risks during storms. The main sewage line is severely damaged, and Station 7B in Zeitoun has stopped functioning, causing raw sewage to flood streets.
Nearly two years of Israeli attacks have crippled Gaza’s sanitation system, leaving facilities like the Sheikh Ajlin treatment plant nonfunctional. Repeated appeals for equipment and fuel have gone unanswered.
A ceasefire brokered in January 2025 offered temporary relief, but Israel has refused to proceed to the second phase, keeping crossings closed and blocking essential supplies. With winter rains approaching, Gaza faces a looming humanitarian catastrophe.
