Netanyahu Ties Political Survival to Endless War, Risking Regional Escalation

Israeli researcher Imad Abu Awad has highlighted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s deliberate efforts to sabotage the ceasefire agreement with Gaza’s resistance, despite full compliance by Palestinian factions and guarantees from mediators. In an interview with Shehab, Abu Awad stated that Netanyahu’s actions are driven by internal political crises and a desire to maintain his grip on power, even at the cost of escalating violence in the region.

Abu Awad noted that Netanyahu was expected to adhere to the first phase of the ceasefire agreement but instead created obstacles and accused the resistance of violations, despite their full compliance. “This happens with clear American support,” he added, pointing to the U.S. administration’s ambiguous stance on the conflict.

Netanyahu’s refusal to end the war on Gaza is closely tied to his domestic political struggles, including corruption cases, internal divisions, and pressure from far-right factions. By aligning himself with extremist figures like Itamar Ben Gvir, Netanyahu has strengthened his coalition but at the cost of prolonging a devastating war with no clear end in sight.

Abu Awad also questioned the role of the Trump administration, initially thought to be focused on achieving a ceasefire to advance regional normalization projects. However, the U.S. approval of Israel’s renewed aggression has raised doubts about Washington’s intentions. “Did Trump give Netanyahu a temporary green light, or has Washington simply given him free rein?” Abu Awad asked.

The researcher warned that Netanyahu’s policies risk further escalation not only in Gaza but across the region, with potentially catastrophic consequences. By linking his political survival to an endless war, Netanyahu is perpetuating a cycle of violence that undermines any prospects for peace and stability.

As tensions rise, the international community faces growing pressure to intervene and hold Netanyahu accountable for his actions, which continue to exact a heavy toll on Palestinian lives and regional security.
