American pediatrician Aqsa Dourani, a board member of Doctors Without Borders in the US, has recounted harrowing experiences during a two-month humanitarian mission in Gaza, asserting that Israel deliberately inflicts cruelty on the civilian population. She described severe starvation, continuous bombardment, and devastating injuries among children, highlighting that even the amount of food she was allowed to bring in was strictly limited. “I have worked in areas with severe hunger, but Gaza shows unprecedented cruelty,” she said.
Dourani detailed the scale of the suffering, explaining that children in intensive care wards endure mutilations, missing limbs, and third-degree burns, often without sufficient pain medication. Many scream not from pain, but from hunger. She described medical staff working exhausted and undernourished, some living in tents, while having lost dozens of family members to Israeli attacks. The doctor expressed profound sorrow and shame at being unable to halt the ongoing genocide, praising Palestinian doctors for their compassion and resilience under unimaginable conditions.
Her account captured the stark contrast she witnessed leaving Gaza: cities reduced to rubble while Israeli soldiers enjoyed meals just beyond the border. Since October 7, 2023, Gaza has suffered a prolonged genocide under siege, with critical shortages of food and medical aid. The World Health Organization and United Nations have repeatedly called for immediate reopening of crossings and unrestricted humanitarian access, emphasising that hundreds of aid trucks are needed daily to prevent further civilian deaths.
