Israeli Soldier in Romania Faces Legal Action for Alleged War Crimes in Gaza

Pro-Palestinian legal activists have filed a criminal complaint in Romania, seeking the arrest and investigation of an Israeli soldier currently in the Southeast European country, suspected of committing war crimes in Gaza. The International Centre for Justice for Palestinians (ICJP), in collaboration with a local Romanian legal team, submitted the complaint to Romanian authorities as part of its new initiative, Global 195.

The ICJP presented evidence against the named suspect, including a photograph of him in Gaza alongside another soldier wearing civilian Palestinian clothing. The legal group contends that this individual participated in Israeli military attacks that could be classified as war crimes under both Romanian and international law.

The complaint references arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Military Affairs Yoav Gallant. It urges Romanian authorities to act in accordance with their obligations under the Rome Statute and relevant provisions of the Romanian Penal Code concerning war crimes and crimes against humanity.

According to national and international law, if a suspected war criminal is present in Romania, the country's legal system is obliged to respond, stated the ICJP. The group's legal team has requested that Romanian police detain the individual, seize his electronic devices for forensic examination, and initiate a comprehensive criminal investigation.

"No perpetrator of international crimes should be able to roam the world with impunity," said Tayab Ali, director of the ICJP. "Romania now has a legal and moral duty to act. War crimes must be prosecuted." As the ongoing violence against Palestinians in Gaza continues, numerous initiatives are emerging worldwide to hold individuals accountable for alleged war crimes committed in the region.

Global 195, a London-based legal coalition, aims to uphold international law and advocate for Palestinian rights. The name "195" refers to the number of countries under international criminal law jurisdiction. The coalition includes lawyers from Malaysia, Turkey, Norway, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the UK, among others.

During a press conference in Westminster, London, the organizers announced the launch of Global 195. They stated that they would work simultaneously across multiple jurisdictions to file requests for arrest warrants and pursue legal action against those involved in war crimes in Gaza.
