The relentless targeting of journalists in Gaza has become a grim hallmark of the war, as Israeli forces systematically seek to silence those documenting the ongoing atrocities. According to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), the killing of media workers is not incidental but a deliberate strategy aimed at suppressing evidence of the unfolding genocide.
Since October 2023, more than 210 journalists have been killed, making Gaza the deadliest place in the world for the press. Among them was Saeed Abu Hassanein, who died alongside his wife and daughter after an Israeli shelling in Deir al-Balah. Many journalists have been struck by airstrikes or sniper fire while attempting to report from the ground, their courage met with brutal repression.
The PCHR strongly condemned these actions, warning that the systematic elimination of journalists serves to obscure the truth from the international community. It stressed that these killings, carried out in defiance of international human rights law, constitute war crimes under the Rome Statute.
As journalists risk their lives to bear witness, the lack of accountability only emboldens further violence. The PCHR called on the International Criminal Court to urgently investigate and prosecute those responsible, warning that the silencing of Gaza’s journalists is a direct assault on fundamental human rights.
In Gaza today, telling the truth has become a death sentence. The world’s failure to act risks allowing this darkness to deepen—and with it, the last remaining windows into the suffering of a people under siege.
