Gaza Edges Toward Collapse Amid Starvation and Water Crisis, Warns Al-Shawa

Azzam Al-Shawa, head of the Palestinian NGO Network, has sounded the alarm over the unprecedented humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza, as food and water supplies reach critical lows under the continued Israeli assault.

Flour reserves for bakeries were depleted at the end of March, causing a near-total halt in bread production. The daily ration has fallen below one loaf per person. Community kitchens, which have been a vital source of relief, are expected to shut down within days—threatening food access for nearly 40% of Gaza’s families.

The situation for children is especially dire. Dozens are suffering from acute malnutrition, and Gaza’s healthcare system is incapable of responding due to a crippling shortage of medicine, medical supplies, and nutritional treatments. Water supplies are also dangerously low, with fuel scarcity threatening the collapse of water and sanitation services.

Military escalation has rendered approximately 69% of Gaza’s territory inaccessible, making aid delivery nearly impossible and forcing widespread displacement. Al-Shawa described the situation as rapidly deteriorating and labelled the use of starvation tactics as a war crime and part of a deliberate campaign of ethnic cleansing.

“This is the most dangerous chapter the Palestinian people have ever endured,” Al-Shawa warned, urging immediate international intervention to prevent total collapse.
