EU Calls on Israel to End Gaza Siege as Humanitarian Crisis Reaches Breaking Point

The European Commission has issued a renewed and urgent appeal for Israel to lift its devastating blockade on the Gaza Strip, warning that the limited aid delivered during the last ceasefire is nearly exhausted. With Israel's total closure of all crossings since March 2, Gaza’s 2.4 million residents are now teetering on the edge of full-scale famine and medical collapse.

Anwar Al-Anouni, spokesperson for the European Commission, voiced alarm over reports from humanitarian agencies detailing the catastrophic situation. “We are extremely alarmed by reports showing that the limited food aid delivered during the ceasefire is nearly depleted,” he said. “The European Union reiterates that the delivery of humanitarian assistance to civilians in need must be conducted in accordance with international humanitarian law.”

The EU reiterated its demand for Israel to allow wide-scale humanitarian access and to end the siege that has strangled life in Gaza for more than a month—an appeal that comes as evidence mounts of deliberate starvation tactics in the besieged enclave. According to the World Bank, Israel’s ongoing assault—described by rights groups and legal experts as genocidal—has driven nearly the entire population into poverty, with no access to food, water, or basic medical care.

Since October 2023, Israel’s campaign in Gaza has killed or wounded over 170,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and left more than 11,000 missing. Yet, as international bodies issue statements, the situation on the ground continues to worsen, with no immediate action to stop the catastrophe.
