In Gaza, where war has already devastated homes and hospitals, even water has become a target. According to UN Special Rapporteur Pedro Agudo, nearly the entire population—2.1 million Palestinians—is now trapped in a deadly water crisis, denied access to one of life’s most basic needs.
Agudo warns that around 70% of the Strip’s water infrastructure has been destroyed by Israeli military attacks. The destruction is not incidental. “It is systematic,” he said, describing the crisis as a “silent but deadly bomb” claiming lives through disease, thirst, and despair.
With fuel cut off and purification plants shut down, many residents are forced to drink contaminated water, risking severe health consequences. Per person, only 5 litres of water are available per day—far below the minimum for survival.
The message is clear: water is being used not just as a resource, but as a weapon. In Gaza, even thirst has become political. Yet amid this brutal deprivation, Palestinians endure—not because they should have to, but because the world has not acted to stop it.
