UNRWA: 92% of Gaza’s Homes Destroyed as Displacement and Famine Threaten Entire Population

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has revealed a devastating new statistic: 92% of homes in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed or damaged due to Israel’s ongoing war on the territory. The figure paints a harrowing picture of the scale of destruction after nearly 20 months of relentless bombardment, siege, and forced displacement.

“Families in Gaza are facing unimaginable destruction,” UNRWA stated, citing data from the UN’s Protection Cluster. The agency confirmed that “countless residents have been displaced multiple times, and shelter is extremely scarce,” as it continues to provide life-saving assistance under impossible conditions.

The agency also reiterated the urgent need to lift the suffocating blockade that has crippled Gaza for 18 years and intensified since the war began. With over 1.9 million people — 90% of Gaza’s population — displaced, many for the tenth time or more, the humanitarian collapse is accelerating.

Hospitals, schools, homes, and even makeshift tents are under constant Israeli bombardment, according to UNRWA, which reports that the current military operations — by land, air, and sea — have decimated civilian infrastructure and caused massive loss of life.

The situation has now reached catastrophic proportions. The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) assessment warns that Gaza’s entire population is at risk of severe famine due to prolonged conflict, repeated displacement, and Israel’s persistent restrictions on aid.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have issued 23 evacuation orders since March, covering over two-thirds of Gaza’s land, including entire governorates like Rafah. These evacuation zones now encompass 132 UNRWA facilities, making it nearly impossible to deliver humanitarian support.

What remains of Gaza is a shattered land, with its people forced to flee again and again, as food vanishes, homes collapse, and the world continues to look away.
