UK Legal Experts Demand Sanctions on Israel Over Gaza Crisis

More than 800 British lawyers, academics, and retired judges, including former Supreme Court justices, have called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to impose sanctions on Israel and review its UN membership, citing evidence of war crimes and genocide in Gaza.

In a letter published by "The Guardian", prominent legal figures, such as Lord Sumption and Lord Wilson, accused Israel of violating international law through its military offensive, which has killed or wounded over 177,000 Palestinians—most of them women and children—since October. They highlighted extremist statements by Israeli officials, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s vow to "wipe out what remains of Palestinian Gaza," as proof of intent to commit atrocities.

The letter also condemned Israel’s expansion of illegal settlements and its efforts to dismantle UNRWA, the primary aid agency for Palestinians. While the UK has suspended trade talks and sanctioned extremist settlers, the signatories argue stronger measures are needed, including a full review of economic ties with Israel.

This demand comes as Israeli forces escalate their assault on Gaza with "Operation Gideon’s Chariots," backed by unwavering US support. With thousands dead, missing, or displaced, the legal experts warn that failing to act undermines international law and perpetuates the suffering of Palestinians.
