Palestinian Detainees Injured as Israel’s Defence System Strikes Prison Compound

Several Palestinian detainees from Gaza have reportedly been wounded after fragments from an Israeli missile interception struck Megiddo Prison in northern Israel, prompting outcry from rights groups over what they describe as a new layer of neglect and abuse within the Israeli prison system.

The injuries occurred during an Israeli response to Iranian missiles early Sunday, when shrapnel from the interception is said to have pierced prison buildings. According to the Palestinian Centre for Prisoner Advocacy, the wounded detainees, some already in poor health, have not been hospitalised or given adequate medical attention.

The group condemned the incident as a flagrant breach of international law, accusing Israel of failing in its basic obligations under the Geneva Conventions. It described the refusal to transfer the injured for treatment as part of a broader policy of dehumanisation and collective punishment targeting Palestinian prisoners.

Calls have been issued for an international inquiry and urgent intervention by the International Committee of the Red Cross. Rights monitors argue this latest incident reflects an escalating disregard for the safety and dignity of Palestinian detainees, especially those from Gaza, who make up a large proportion of the over 10,000 Palestinians currently held in Israeli prisons.

Amid war and occupation, the prison walls offer no protection. For many Palestinians, even captivity is not spared from violence, turning places of detention into yet another front of suffering.
