Morocco to start contacts and trips with Israel

Morocco announced the resumption of flights and communications with the Israeli state, after the normalisation relations between the two sides.

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced that in statements, transmitted by a statement of the presidency of the Moroccan government, following a cabinet meeting.

Bourita said: "The Kingdom of Morocco has decided to start resuming flights and contacts with the Israeli side," without setting a date for that.

On December 10, Rabat announced its intention to resume official bilateral contacts and diplomatic relations with Israel as soon as possible, according to a statement by the royal court.

Bourita reaffirmed the firm position of the Moroccan Kingdom, which derives its roots from the special ties that bring together the Jewish community of Moroccan origin, including those in Israel.

"These relations pushed the country to the Palestinian cause, which had previously proven successful, which would enable the country to play its full role in establishing a lasting and just peace for the Middle East region," he added.

Morocco and Israel began low-level relations in 1993 after the Oslo agreement was signed, but Rabat stopped them after the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising, specifically in 2002.

With the return of relations, Morocco will be the only Maghreb country that establishes relations with Israel, after Mauritania cut its relations with Tel Aviv in 2010, which is a remarkable Israeli breakthrough for the Maghreb region.
