UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell has warned of a worsening nutrition crisis among infants in the Gaza Strip, as the Israeli occupation continues to obstruct the entry of life-saving aid.
Russell described the situation as catastrophic, with children suffering acute malnutrition due to the collapse of health services, lack of clean water, and widespread destruction of food systems.
“Without immediate access, more children will die or suffer irreversible harm,” she said.
Humanitarian agencies remain unable to reach large parts of Gaza, particularly in the north, where famine-like conditions have been reported. Since October 2023, Israeli occupation forces have targeted bakeries, warehouses, and aid convoys, compounding the crisis.
Local health authorities warn that hospitals are overwhelmed and unable to treat the growing number of malnourished children. Deaths from starvation and preventable illness are increasing daily.
UNICEF is calling for urgent international pressure to lift the siege and ensure sustained humanitarian access. The agency warns that Gaza is at risk of losing an entire generation of children.
