Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, denounced the so-called “Gaza Humanitarian Organization” as a sinister trap that violates the core principles of civilian protection and human dignity. Speaking on Thursday, she insisted that breaking the siege on Gaza requires external intervention.
“This is beyond political solutions,” Albanese declared. “It is about halting the violence, forced displacement, and annexation of East Jerusalem.”
Highlighting the profiteering behind the war, she revealed that certain companies have increased their profits by 120%, generating $70 billion amid the conflict. Albanese stressed that ending the genocide is not only the duty of states but also of these corporate actors.
Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, she presented her report which provides evidence that Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to genocide. “What is happening in Palestine exposes a system from which we all suffer,” she said.
Albanese was unequivocal: “This is not war, but a campaign of extermination.” She underscored the scale of destruction, noting that Israel has been supplied with 35,000 tons of explosives, six times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
“The only solution is states committing to the International Court of Justice standards,” she said. “Companies involved in the economy of genocide must sever ties with Israel or face accountability.”
In response, Norway’s KLP pension fund announced it would divest from two companies supplying military equipment potentially used in Gaza, though these firms were not named in the UN report.
Albanese’s report draws on legal precedents such as the IG Farben trial post-World War II and South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which held corporations responsible for complicity in human rights abuses.
She reminded the international community of the UN’s 2011 Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which mandate corporate due diligence to prevent human rights violations.
Her recommendations include imposing sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel, and urging the International Criminal Court and national courts to prosecute corporate executives and businesses complicit in international crimes and illicit profiteering.
