“Handala” Sets Sail from Southern Italy to Challenge Gaza Blockade

The “Handala” ship, part of the Freedom Flotilla initiative, is preparing to depart today from Gallipoli, southern Italy, on a mission to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver symbolic humanitarian aid. Frank Romano, the ship’s owner, emphasised that the voyage is driven by compassion, not politics.

“This journey is for the children of Gaza who have lost their homes, schools, toys, and friends,” Romano said. He criticised governments for failing to pressure Israel to halt what he called a genocide against the Palestinian people, adding that without such ongoing violence, the flotilla would be unnecessary.

Following in the wake of the “Maddalena” ship, which was attacked by Israeli forces earlier this year, the “Handala” aims to open a humanitarian corridor to Gaza. Romano explained that even if the flotilla manages only to send a message of solidarity to Gaza’s besieged residents, the mission will be worthwhile.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition reaffirmed its resolve on social media, insisting that Israeli attempts to suppress their efforts will not stop them from confronting the blockade. They described Gaza’s humanitarian crisis as catastrophic, with escalating risks of famine, disease, and death.

Last week, dozens of activists gathered at the port of Syracuse to show support, waving Palestinian flags and calling for an immediate ceasefire, underscoring international solidarity with Gaza’s people.
