“He Kissed My Hand and Said Thank You”: A U.S. Veteran’s Haunting Memory of Gaza’s Hunger Massacres

Retired U.S. Special Forces officer Anthony Aguilar has spoken out about the horrors he witnessed in Gaza, recalling the story of Amir, a barefoot five-year-old who walked 12 kilometres in search of food. Aguilar described how the starving child, frail and dust-covered, took a small bag of aid, kissed his hand and whispered “thank you” before turning away with what little he had been given.

Moments later, Israeli gunfire tore through the hungry crowd. “They fell before me one by one,” Aguilar said, his voice breaking as he recounted seeing Amir struck down. He resigned soon after, unable to reconcile his conscience with the massacres he witnessed.

Aguilar’s testimony offers a glimpse into a daily nightmare: starving civilians gunned down while queuing for aid, children killed before they can bring food home to their families. In Gaza, even the smallest act of survival can end in tragedy, while the world remains paralysed.
