Zionist influence has long shaped Western foreign policy, ensuring consistent political, military and diplomatic support for “Israel” across international institutions. Yet, the 2024 military offensive in Gaza appears to have triggered a noticeable shift in several Western capitals, driven by mounting public pressure, investigative media coverage and growing human rights advocacy.
In the United Kingdom, more than 500,000 people marched through London in May 2024 calling for an end to military aid for “Israel”. This was one of the country’s largest demonstrations since the Iraq War. In France, opinion polls indicated that 62 percent of respondents supported the formal recognition of the State of Palestine, which prompted the French government to announce that it will proceed with official recognition in September 2025.
Elsewhere, the Netherlands adopted an unprecedented position after a security report revealed “Israeli” involvement in cyber espionage targeting European politicians and journalists. The Dutch parliament went on to declare “Israel” a direct threat to national cybersecurity and suspended certain forms of technical cooperation.
In Germany, where historical sensitivities have long influenced policy towards “Israel”, parliamentary debates grew more intense in June 2025 regarding the continuation of arms exports to Tel Aviv. A DW Trend survey showed that almost half of the German population now supports re-examining the bilateral relationship.
Major Western media outlets, including the BBC, Le Monde and The Guardian, have also expanded their coverage to include reports from human rights organisations that describe “Israel” as practising systematic discrimination against Palestinians.
Although pro-Israel lobbying groups still hold considerable sway, these developments suggest that unconditional Western support for “Israel” is no longer certain. Changing public opinion, more assertive governmental actions and sustained human rights advocacy are contributing to a gradual reassessment of Western positions on the question of Palestine, which could have significant implications for the future political landscape.
