The United Nations Human Rights Office has reported that Israeli forces and armed settlers have killed at least 982 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since 7 October 2023, marking one of the deadliest periods in decades. The UN described this as part of a “systematic and intensifying campaign of violence, oppression and coercion” targeting Palestinian communities.
One recent example came from the village of al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, where Israeli forces destroyed nearly 3,000 olive trees, devastating local livelihoods dependent on agriculture. Residents described the raids as “collective punishment,” as soldiers fired live rounds and tear gas, leaving many injured and denying families access to their lands. Human rights observers say such acts are part of a broader strategy to displace Palestinians and weaken their presence across the territory.
The violence is accompanied by settler attacks, home demolitions, land confiscation, and severe restrictions on movement, creating what the UN calls “unbearable living conditions.” Arrests, raids and attacks on infrastructure have become routine, leaving communities trapped in a cycle of fear and dispossession.
While global attention often focuses on Gaza, where the humanitarian catastrophe continues to mount, Palestinians in the West Bank face daily threats of lethal force and systematic eradication of their livelihoods. Rights groups warn that without urgent international attention, these actions risk becoming another forgotten chapter in the ongoing crisis.
