Ceasefire marred by deadly strike in southern Gaza

A Palestinian was killed on Sunday evening in the Maan area, east of Khan Younès, marking the latest violation of the ceasefire recently agreed between Israel and the Palestinian resistance. Despite formal acceptance of the truce under a U.S.-proposed plan, such breaches have occurred almost daily, underscoring the fragility of the agreement and the persistent threat to civilian life.

Earlier incidents included a drone strike in al-Qarara, north of Khan Younès, which claimed another Palestinian life, while previous Israeli aerial attacks killed at least 20 more, with additional fatalities in Sheikh Radwan and around Khan Younès. Since the ceasefire came into effect, medical teams in Gaza have recovered at least 300 bodies, including 124 within the past 24 hours, alongside 33 injuries admitted to hospitals, reflecting the devastating toll of the ongoing genocidal war.

Displacement remains severe, with around two million Gazans gradually returning to the remnants of their homes amid widespread destruction of residential and critical infrastructure. Although the ceasefire technically ends hostilities, Israel continues to maintain a strict blockade, allowing only a few aid trucks into the territory. The UNRWA has called for full opening of crossings, noting that thousands of aid shipments are ready but cannot reach the population in need.

The first phase of the ceasefire included a prisoner exchange: all 20 living Israeli prisoners were handed over to the Red Cross, while nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners are expected to be released. Yet the repeated violations and ongoing blockade highlight the profound lack of trust and the urgent need for enforcement mechanisms to prevent further atrocities.
