ICJ Orders Israel to Allow Full Humanitarian Access to Gaza

The International Court of Justice has reaffirmed that Israel must urgently permit humanitarian aid to reach Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, underlining its obligations under international law. The ruling, issued on 22 October, emphasises that Israel is required to “respect, protect and fulfil” the human rights of Palestinians, including access to essential supplies and services.

Experts note that the ICJ decision draws directly on the Geneva Conventions, obliging Israel to facilitate independent humanitarian efforts. These include the provision of medical, food, and emergency aid by recognised organisations working in the territory. The court stressed fundamental rights such as the right to life, protection from torture, freedom of movement, security, family protection, adequate living standards, health, education, non-discrimination, and the right to self-determination.

Observers warn that immediate implementation is critical. Delays in permitting aid exacerbate Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, leaving tens of thousands at risk of malnutrition, disease, and further suffering amid the ongoing genocidal war. Analysts from the region emphasise that compliance with the ICJ ruling is both a legal and moral imperative to safeguard the lives and dignity of civilians.
