Gaza Faces Urgent Rehabilitation Crisis for 6,000 Amputees

The Ministry of Health in Gaza has raised alarm over the urgent needs of approximately 6,000 civilians who lost limbs during Israel’s genocidal war. Many of the survivors are in immediate need of both short- and long-term rehabilitation, with thousands lacking access to essential medical, psychological, and social support. The ministry highlighted that the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate for those left permanently injured, leaving families struggling to cope with the consequences of widespread violence.

Children are particularly affected, making up roughly 25% of all amputees in Gaza. The territory now holds the highest rate of child amputees per capita in the world, with many facing lifelong disabilities from a very young age. The psychological and social repercussions for these minors are profound, as they confront permanent impairments while lacking adequate therapeutic support.

The ministry urged international organisations to prioritise the care of amputees in Gaza, calling for expanded access to specialised rehabilitation programmes, prosthetics, and mental health services. Officials emphasised that immediate action is crucial to prevent further suffering and to provide survivors with the chance to regain some independence and quality of life.
