Ceasefire Tested as Israeli Jets Strike Eastern and Southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out a fresh wave of air raids across eastern and southern Lebanon on Friday, shaking border regions already strained by months of instability. Explosions were reported across the Bekaa Valley and parts of the south, with smoke rising from hilly terrain near Hermel and low-flying jets observed over Baalbek and northern Bekaa. The strikes marked another breach of the truce agreed in late 2024, underscoring how fragile that arrangement has become amid a wider regional genocidal war.

Further raids hit areas on the outskirts of Jbaa in the Jezzine district, the Iqlim al-Touffah region, and near Kfar Melki, extending the pattern of bombardment along Lebanon’s south. Israeli officials acknowledged the operations and said they were aimed at military sites, claims that local sources said could not be independently verified. What is not in dispute is the regularity of these attacks since the ceasefire, which residents describe as near-daily, punctuated by the persistent presence of Israeli troops at several points along the frontier despite provisions requiring a full withdrawal.

The human cost has continued to mount. Since the truce came into effect, hundreds have been killed by Israeli fire, according to Lebanese health authorities, with Friday’s raids following similar strikes the previous day that left three people dead. International monitors have logged thousands of airspace violations and repeated ground incursions, warning that such actions erode any remaining confidence in the ceasefire. Lebanese officials and observers argue that the ongoing bombardment deepens instability and risks dragging the country further into the orbit of the genocidal war unfolding across the region.

Diplomatic pressure on Beirut has intensified in parallel, with foreign officials pressing for a roadmap that includes the disarmament of Hezbollah. The group has repeatedly rejected such demands while Israeli forces remain on Lebanese soil and air raids continue, warning that sustained violations could cause the truce to unravel entirely.
