Behind Bars: Palestinian Prisoners Endure Medical Neglect and Systematic Harm

Inside Israeli detention facilities, Palestinian prisoners face life-threatening conditions as a deliberate policy of medical neglect compounds the effects of a genocidal war. Thousands suffer from untreated illnesses, chronic injuries, and complications caused by harsh restraints, overcrowding, and inadequate sanitation. Doctors within the prison system are often complicit, with medical treatment delayed or denied entirely, turning simple ailments into permanent or fatal conditions.

The health crisis in these facilities has escalated since October 2023, as prisoners, particularly those from Gaza, experience worsening illnesses, injuries left untreated, and punitive measures that include shackling, deprivation, and restricted access to medicine. Reports indicate that dozens of prisoners die each year as a direct consequence of this systemic neglect, with many more leaving detention with chronic and dangerous conditions acquired inside. Over 9,300 prisoners are currently held, with significant numbers in isolated or medically unsound facilities near industrial or radioactive sites.

The deliberate denial of healthcare and the misuse of clinics for interrogation violate international law, including provisions of the Geneva Conventions and the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners. Allegations of medical experimentation and exposure to hazardous substances further underline the extreme risks faced by detainees. Experts warn that these conditions amount to a continuation of the genocidal war within prison walls, transforming confinement into a slow, controlled process of harm.
