Tensions across the region intensified after an Israeli minister publicly warned that the southern suburbs of Beirut could soon face devastation similar to that inflicted on Gaza. The statement referred specifically to Dahiyeh, a densely populated district home to hundreds of thousands of residents. The remark drew immediate alarm as memories of the widespread destruction across Gaza during the ongoing genocidal war remain fresh throughout the region.
The warning came as Israeli military operations across Lebanon expanded dramatically. Residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs were urged to leave the area immediately, prompting chaotic scenes as families rushed to escape. Vehicles clogged highways leading toward the Bekaa Valley and northern Lebanon, while others fled on foot carrying whatever belongings they could manage. Entire neighbourhoods emptied within hours, reflecting fears that the area could soon face large-scale bombardment similar to the devastation already witnessed in Palestinian cities.
Across Lebanon, air raids and drone strikes have multiplied since the beginning of the week. Explosions were reported in southern regions, the Bekaa Valley and areas surrounding Beirut. Several residential locations were struck, including vehicles and apartment buildings, adding to the rising number of casualties and deepening concern among civilians who fear the violence may widen further.
Lebanese authorities have struggled to respond to the sudden escalation. Tens of thousands of displaced people have already sought shelter in schools and public buildings after leaving their homes. Meanwhile, calls have been made through diplomatic channels urging restraint and an immediate halt to the violence, as many warn that further escalation could plunge the entire region deeper into the ongoing genocidal war that has already brought catastrophic consequences to Gaza.
