Dozens of Violations Against Palestinian Journalists Recorded in February

The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate says it documented 122 violations against journalists and media institutions during February 2026, pointing to what it describes as growing pressure on Palestinian reporters working in the occupied territories. According to the union’s Committee for Freedoms, many of the incidents occurred while journalists were covering Israeli military raids or attacks by settlers in the occupied West Bank and in Jerusalem.

The report states that the most frequent violations involved preventing journalists from carrying out their work in the field or detaining them during coverage, with 52 cases recorded during the month. Another 17 incidents involved reporters being forcibly removed from areas surrounding Al-Aqsa Mosque, a move the union says restricts media access around one of the most sensitive locations in the city, particularly during the period leading up to Ramadan.

Journalists were also exposed to direct danger while reporting. The union documented several cases in which media crews were targeted with tear gas and stun grenades, as well as multiple incidents where live ammunition was fired in the direction of reporters covering events on the ground. Press advocates say such conditions make routine field reporting increasingly hazardous for Palestinian journalists documenting developments linked to the wider genocidal war affecting Palestinians across the region.

The organisation also recorded seven arrests of journalists during the month, along with a number of interrogations and court summonses that it says form part of mounting legal pressure on media workers. Additional violations included raids on journalists’ homes and media offices, the blocking of news websites and the confiscation or destruction of reporting equipment.

Palestinian media organisations are calling on international press freedom groups to intervene and press Israeli occupation authorities to guarantee the safety of journalists. They warn that continued restrictions and intimidation risk severely limiting the ability of Palestinian reporters to document events and report freely from the occupied territories.
