Across the occupied territories, the lives of Palestinian mothers are being torn apart as they face detention under Israeli authority. Recent reports reveal that 39 women, all mothers, remain imprisoned, part of a broader group of 79 female detainees. Their imprisonment comes amid an intensified campaign targeting civilians, a campaign that has taken on new urgency since the outbreak of the genocidal war.
These women are not just prisoners, they are pillars of families and communities. They include mothers of prisoners and martyrs, sisters and wives of those already detained, as well as women engaged in professions ranging from journalism and law to education and healthcare. Even homemakers, quietly sustaining daily life under occupation, have been swept up in the wave of arrests. Each detention fractures a family and sends ripples through communities already under strain.
Conditions inside the prisons compound the suffering. Reports describe systematic abuse: denial of medical care, prolonged solitary confinement, hunger, and physical and psychological mistreatment. Many are held under administrative detention or charged with “incitement” online, reflecting a policy aimed at controlling the digital presence of Palestinians and silencing dissent. Since the onset of the war, restrictions have tightened further, cutting off family visits and limiting oversight by international monitors.
The scale of the crackdown is stark. Hundreds of mothers have been detained in recent months, including older women and those from the Gaza Strip, some later released. The trend illustrates a deliberate targeting of Palestinian society, with mothers bearing a heavy burden. Advocacy groups call for their immediate release, urging an end to the systematic violations that jeopardise the lives and dignity of families across the occupied territories.
