Israeli forces arrested 100 Palestinians in 2020 because of their activities and opinions posted on social media outlets, particularly Facebook, according to Palestinian Prisoners Center for Studies.
The center pointed out that Israeli authorities violate all the international conventions, agreements and treaties which grant human beings the right to express opinions and thoughts freely in which they keep arresting Palestinians on the impact of their right to speak.
“Detentions prolonged women, children, journalists, activists, leaders and deputies of the Legislative Assembly,” the center mentioned.
Israel established a new electronic unit to follow everything the Palestinian youth publish on Facebook, which categorizes some of the words the Palestinians use such as martyrs, publishing their pictures or mentioning their nicknames.
The military prosecution transfer the file of the detainee into the Israeli court, including dozens of papers which document what he posted on his personal accounts, and claim that they are inflammatory phases. Thus, it appeals the court to sentence him arguing that he is a source of danger.
Wafaa Abo Jomaa, 52, was among those arrested and sentenced for 6 months under the accusation of writing inflammatory posts on social media.
Journalist Mojahed Ben Mefleh and Khalid Jamal Faraj were also arrested in Israeli jails after being accused of posting inflammatory posts on their accounts.
The center confirmed that Israeli did not only issued administrative sentences against the Palestinians on the background of activities on social media, but also violated their rights by forcing them not to use any on their accounts for months and imposed high fines on them to prevent them from writing any posts.
It finally pointed that the international treaties and conventions allowed human beings to speak freely such are Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1966 and European Convention of Human Rights 1950, calling the international society and its human rights institutions to step in and protect the right of the Palestinians to express their opinions freely without any restrictions.
